"Powder" by Tobias Wolff
To help us get started at the beginning of our Narrative Essay writing, we covered one last short story, broke it down, and used songs to help sort out some of the finer details regarding archetype, plot structure, and indirect v. direct characterization. This took place over two days in preparation for our narrative essay. I created the worksheet and handpicked the songs that I believed best related to the short story. This strengthened my ability as an educator to create materials as well as aid students in making text-to-text connections.

This is the story we covered together as a way for me to see what they knew about narratives.
Here is where I used music to help them make connections between "Powder" and sogns that are popular with a large range of kids. This also helped me see how well they understood archetype, plot structure, and indirect v. direct characterization based on their answers.
This is the Answer Key/model that I provided the students surrounding their media connections.
